Indigenous People’s Network (IPN) is a grassroots, community based, native organization working to improve the quality of life of All people. IPN brings together tribal members, Urban Indians, and allies from across Massachusetts and Rhode Island to organize around food, land, health, and cultural survival. Its programs, including the Indigenous Food Sovereignty initiative, grow out of what community members say they need rather than what an outside funder prescribes.
Our work goes beyond the contemporary settler colonial practice of land trusts. Historically, land management tools have dispossessed indigenous communities of ancestral lands and excluded us from decision-making processes related to land use and management. To our community, land is not property and conservation cannot exist without indigenous community.
Our repatriation campaigns, aim to reclaim ancestral lands for the Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe of the Pokanoket Nation. We also support other tribes in regaining land and assist BIPOC communities as they access land across New England. Our efforts are focused on conserving the natural habitats, wildlife, and waterways that make up these lands, while also promoting responsible and regenerative use.
We serve farmer, rancher, and land steward communities who have been impacted by systemic and institutional racism and discrimination. Across the region, we share historical perspectives, agricultural practices, and our traditional spiritual values. We work with our land-based constituency to improve their livelihoods and the livelihoods of seven generation to come.
We believe that by protecting these resources and empowering native leaders, we are not only preserving the legacy of the Pocasset people, but are also ensuring a healthy and vibrant ecosystem for all who call this land home.
